There are so many different topics to discuss on the
subject - dad's emotional support of breastfeeding, dad's opportunity to
bond with baby, funny dad experiences related to breastfeeding, mom &
dad's intimate relationship, etc.
Most
expectant dads know that breastfeeding is the best way to feed a baby. For
dads of breastfed babies, it's common to feel some or all of the
following:
• Worry
that they will have a harder time bonding and developing a relationship
with their baby than their partner will.
•
Resentment of the baby who has physically "come between" them and their
partner.
Dads do need
to be a part of the experience, but the physical act of placing food into
the baby's mouth is not an essential part of the dads/baby relationship.
Dad can sit with mom and baby during breastfeedings, making eye contact
with baby, stroking baby's skin, talking softly to baby, etc. And if the
family chooses to supplement with bottles of expressed breastmilk, dads
can give baby a bottle very soon, and dads can feed baby cereal and baby
food within a few more months.
It brought a tear to my eye just thinking of what a wonderful loving bond
there is between mom, baby and dad when dad supports breastfeeding.
So as
strange as it may sound, dads have a very important role to play in
breastfeeding. Here are a few specific ways
dads can help:
·Make sure to get
a lot of skin-to-skin contact with the baby.
·Spend plenty of
time just hanging out with the baby to get funny dad experiences.
·Bottle-feed the
baby with breast milk's mom.
·Dads must be patient if mom
seems less interested in sex than in pre-baby days.
