In facts, if a
breastfeeding mother misses or delays a feed, her breasts may overfill
and become painful and start leaking breast milk.
Feed the baby with breast milk
from each breast for as long as the baby wants. This allows each
breast to produce the proper amount of breast milk at each feeding and
prevents
breast infection.
Let the baby set the pace and always wash the hands before offer the
breast milk to the baby to keep away the baby from foreign allergenic
material.
Once the mother has got a
breastfeeding routine, she can express her breast milk by hand or with
a breast pump if she is away from the baby during feeding time. This
will allow the baby to have breast milk from a cup or a bottle
(depending on the baby's age). Expressed breast milk is also a way to
keep breastfeeding while the baby is in child care facility.
Breast milk contains essential
antibodies (IgA) that help protect the baby. Store expressed
breast milk in the refrigerator for up to 48 hours. Does not add
warm expressed milk to milk that has been already chilled or
frozen while freezing breast milk.
The milk can contain hot spots
that can harm the baby. When it's time for feeding, put the thawed
breast milk into a feeding bottle. To mix any separated layers, shake
the bottle of thawed expressed breast milk well. After each feeding,
throw away any leftover breast milk.
Like all kinds of milk, breast
milk is not a dependable source of Vitamin D. The baby won’t need any other vitamin supplements.
In fact, if the mother is sick, ask the
doctor for information about giving breast milk to the baby. Only small amounts will
pass through breast milk, and there are usually no problems for the
baby.
