Breastfeeding complications arise from many
factors. For some,
breastfeeding is not a healthy way and if you have had
breast
surgery, breastfeeding may
cause complications.
Complications for you and your baby:
1.Jaundice
Breastmilk jaundice
as one of breastfeeding complications is normal. Higher than
usual levels of bilirubin or longer than usual jaundice may occur
because the baby is not getting enough milk. When the baby is
getting little milk, bowel movements tend to be scanty and infrequent
so that the bilirubin that was in the baby's gut gets reabsorbed into
the blood instead of leaving the body with the bowel movements.
2.Difficulty latching onto mother’s breast
A weak or ineffective suck may
cause a baby to obtain inadequate milk with breastfeeding and result
in a diminished milk supply and an underweight baby.
3.Sore nipples
Sometimes breastfeeding can be very
painful for the mother. This breastfeeding complication is a
tender nipples that make nursing painful and frustrating. Improperly
positioned babies or babies that suck very vigorously can make the
breasts very sore.
4.Nipple Vasopasms.
Some women complain of sharp
stabbing pains in their breast and backs when they are nursing.
5.Breast Surgery
Breast
surgery can cause various complications during
breastfeeding.
6.Clogged Milk Ducts
Clogged milk ducts can be
identified as small, red tender lumps on the tissue of the breast. By
emptying the breasts, you’ll actually help to prevent clogged milk
ducts.
7.Breast Infection/Mastitis
This breastfeeding complication's
symptoms includes severe pain or soreness, hardness of the breast,
redness of the breast, heat coming from the area, swelling, or even
chills. The treatment of breast infection includes bed rest,
antibiotics, pain relievers, increased fluid intake, and applying
heat.
8.Engorgement
When the breast overfills
with milk it becomes painful. Engorgement comes from not
getting
enough milk from the breast, nipple pain, improper feeding technique,
infrequent feeding or infant-mother separation. Warm water or warm
compresses and expressing some milk before feeding can also help make
breastfeeding more effective and prevent this breastfeeding
complication.
9.Fungal Infections of the
Baby
This
breastfeeding complication involving the breasts are common in women
who are breastfeeding an infant, especially infants that may be
subject to chronic infection. Most notably, newborns who develop Oral
thrush, also known as simply "Thrush", will pass fungal infections to
the breasts of feeding mothers, leading to complications in both Mom
and baby. As a fungal infection of the mouth, many breastfeeding women
are alarmed at the presence of thrush in a baby and the concurrent
fungal infection symptoms of the breasts. When suffering from
breastfeeding associated thrush fungal infection, it is not uncommon
for the breastfeeding woman to be frightened by the sudden onset of
symptoms and associated breast pain. Most notably, symptoms of a
fungal infection in the breastfeeding mother, beyond pain, may include
redness and swelling around the nipple area and deep pains within the
breasts, especially when breastfeeding.
