LATCH ON

Once your nipple reaches your baby's comfort zone, breastfeeding feels good. When your baby lunges toward the breast, support her body and:

·   Align your baby so that her nose is in line with your nipple.

·   Tickle the lip.

·  Repeat until your baby's mouth opens wide like a yawn and she lunges for the breast.

·  As your baby lunges for the breast, to get a better latch give a gentle but firm push from behind her shoulders.

Breastfeed until the baby's latch on done. Then, offer the other breast to latch on. Babies take one breast at some feedings and both breasts at other feedings. If breastfeeding hurts, seek help right away from a board-certified lactation consultant (IBCLC).

Time to nurse -- get comfortable!

To position your baby at your breast, place her alongside of you, supported with pillows if necessary to raise her to the level of your breast to get a better latch.

6 ways to know if your baby is getting a better latch:

1.      Your little one is taking in a good mouthful of your breast.

2.      Her lips should be flanged to get a better latch.

3.      Her tongue should be visible cupping your breast. You might not see her tongue cupping your breast if she has a tight or short frenulum.

4.      You hear a regular suck-swallow pattern, with occasional pauses once your baby is well attached.

5.      Your baby stays awake for a good feed. In the newborn period, babies that are nursing well often stay at the breast for at least 30 to 40 minutes. If your baby's sucking begins to slow early in the feed, you can use your hand to gently compress your breast, massaging toward your nipple.

6.      Your breasts and nipples are comfortable. Check your nipples as your baby comes off your breast.

If the baby had difficulties latching for several months, before latching gently close the baby's mouth to see if she will open wider than usual and supporting your breast with your hand to help the baby get a better latch.
